Macleay Street forms the backbone, with Piccolo Bar occupying just 20 square metres of a space that holds Sydney's first-ever liquor licence - a 70-year-old institution serving aperitivos and hot dogs to 12 people inside, plus eight more on the pavement until 10pm when the outdoor tables get packed away. Bar Hernandez rounds out the strip on Kings Cross Road, where bar seats are reserved for drinks-only patrons while the dining tables operate under food requirements.
The crowd skews older and more residential than the backpacker territory next door. Art deco apartment buildings line the quiet streets and the proximity to Elizabeth Bay House and Fitzroy Gardens gives the area a leafy, established feel. Kings Cross Station sits on the border for rail connections, while buses along Darlinghurst Road link back to the CBD via Woolloomooloo.
