Marrickville has become Sydney's craft brewery capital, with seven breweries and pubs we track clustered around the industrial Sydney Steel Road precinct and scattered through the suburb's evolving drinking scene.
The brewery strip along Sydney Steel Road and Sydenham Road draws most of the attention - Batch Brewing Company pioneered the area in their warehouse space, while The Grifter Brewing Co operates from a sun-drenched former laundromat and Pickled Monkey Brewing runs 24 taps alongside Roman-style pizza. These aren't polished taprooms but working breweries with concrete floors, roller doors and the hum of fermentation tanks.
Beyond the brewery precinct, the suburb's pub scene reflects Marrickville's working-class roots with a creative overlay. The Marrickville Hotel operates from a converted Smart Dollar shop, while Vic On The Park draws multigenerational crowds to its expansive back deck and basketball court. The Montague Hotel splits the difference with a sports bar downstairs and cocktail venue Harriet's upstairs.
Most venues sit within walking distance of Marrickville Station, making the area an easy hop from the city for brewery crawls. The industrial character that attracted craft brewers in the first place - cheap warehouse rent, loading dock access - gives the whole precinct a rough-edged authenticity that feels worlds away from the Inner West's more gentrified drinking strips.
